 Martin Murray

PhD candidate

Over the years, I have done a variety of jobs; I have been a barman, a postman, a waiter, a sailor, a research scientist, a van driver, a taxi driver and a nuclear medicine technician. In 1990 I entered the Franciscan novitiate and a year after that I made simple profession as a Franciscan friar. I left the friars in 1995 and since then I have qualified as a nurse and almost my entire nursing career has been spent working with people on the margins of society; in the 19 years since I qualified, I have spent 17 of them working in a drug service or working as part of a homeless service. I am qualified both as an Adult and a Mental Health Nurse. I have a BSc and an MSc in Health Studies and an LLM in Medical Law.

Research and Teaching Interests

I am currently doing a Doctorate in Practical Theology at Glasgow. The working title of my thesis is Catholic Social Teaching and Harm Reduction for People who Inject Drugs.
I run sessional teaching sessions at UWS for postgrad nurses doing the Public Health and District Nursing courses. My sessions are on healthcare and health promotion for homeless people.
