Professor Fiona Macpherson

Professor and Head of Philosophy, Director of the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience



Professor Fiona Macpherson is Professor and Head of Philosophy and Director of the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience, which she founded in 2004. She gained her PhD from the University of Stirling, has been a visiting fellow at Harvard, a teaching fellow at St Andrews, and was Rosamund Chambers Research Fellow in Philosophy at Girton College Cambridge, before taking up a lectureship at Glasgow. At present she is a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council, trustee of the Kennedy Memorial Trust, president of the Scots Philosophical Association, and Co-Director of CenSes: Centre for the Study of the Senses at the Institute of Philosophy, School of Advanced Study, University of London.

Research and Teaching Interests

Professor Macpherson works on the nature of consciousness, perception and perceptual experience, introspection, imagination and the metaphysics of mind. Topics that she has published on include: the structure of experience, cognitive penetration, the nature and individuation of the senses, cross-modal phenomena, sensory substitution and augmentation, hallucination, illusion, delusion, novel colours, inverted spectra, ambiguous and impossible figures, synaesthesia, the admissible contents of experience, disjunctivism and representational theories of phenomenal character.
